Ba Danh Pagoda appeared in the 7th century during the Ly Dynasty, originally a small temple dedicated to the Four Pháp. Over more than 1,300 years, the pagoda has been continuously restored, repaired, and expanded through various feudal periods.

The period when the pagoda flourished was under King Le Huy Tong (1675–1750). During this phase, the structure underwent major restoration, and its current appearance was largely shaped. At that time, Ba Danh Pagoda stood out as one of the major Buddhist religious centers of the Day River delta region, playing a significant role in the spiritual life of the local people.

The proverb "as deserted as Ba Danh Pagoda" originates from the pagoda's remote location in ancient times. However, this very quietness and "desertedness" became a unique characteristic, creating a uniquely tranquil space that many seek. Today, this proverb has become a symbol with Vietnamese cultural nuances, reflecting the philosophy of living close to nature and valuing peace.
