Sun Phu Quoc Airways purchases 40 of Boeing's most modern aircraft, establishing intercontinental flights to Phu Quoc

19/02/2026
February 18 (Washington, D.C., USA time, which is early morning February 19 Hanoi time), within the framework of the working visit of General Secretary To Lam and a high-level delegation to the United States to attend the Peace Council, Boeing Group and Sun Group's Sun PhuQuoc Airways airline signed a contract to purchase 40 of the most modern Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner wide-body aircraft, with a total estimated value of approximately 22.5 billion USD. This is an aircraft model considered "a revolution in modern air travel."

The contract signing ceremony of Sun Phu Quoc Airways with Boeing - the world's leading aerospace corporation and one of the largest exporters of the United States, providing products and services to customers in over 150 countries, took place in Washington, D.C., United States, witnessed by General Secretary To Lam and high-level leaders of the two countries.

The event not only marks one of Vietnam's largest civil aviation contracts, contributing to promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and the US, but also affirms the increasingly proactive role of Vietnamese enterprises in the global aviation value chain.

Completing the foundation for intercontinental flights

The selection of the 787-9 Dreamliner – Boeing's most modern wide-body aircraft – clearly demonstrates Sun PhuQuoc Airways' orientation to establish an intercontinental flight network. Belonging to the 787 Dreamliner series – an aircraft that redefines long-haul air transport and is considered a 'revolution in modern air travel', with a capacity of about 296 passengers and a maximum range of 14,010 km, the 787-9 Dreamliner allows the airline to perform continuous flights of up to 16 hours, opening up the possibility of operating direct intercontinental routes connecting Phu Quoc with the US, key economic and tourist centers in Europe such as the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Middle East, CIS countries, Japan, and Australia in the future. Besides its superior operational efficiency, the 787-9 Dreamliner also helps save 20–25% fuel and reduce emissions compared to the previous generation, aligning with the sustainable development orientation the airline pursues.

This is a strategic step to form an "air bridge" connecting Phu Quoc, Vietnam with the world, while realizing the "Resort in the Sky" model orientation - bringing 5-star resort experiences to an altitude of 10,000 meters. When intercontinental flight routes are established directly from the Jade Island to major economic centers across five continents, Phu Quoc will become an independent international gateway on the world's aviation map.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of Sun Group, said: "The cooperation with Boeing lays a solid foundation for building an international-class airline, synchronized with the luxury tourism and resort ecosystem that Sun Group is developing. We chose the Boeing 787-9 not only for its superior operational performance but also because it is the most suitable aircraft model to realize the vision of bringing Phu Quoc to the world and bringing the world to Phu Quoc."

Contributing to promoting Vietnam - US trade relations

In the context of Vietnam ranking 7th among the US's largest trading partners in 2025, with bilateral trade turnover reaching nearly 171 billion USD, large-scale contracts in high-tech sectors such as aviation are of particular importance.

The 22.5 billion USD deal not only helps Sun PhuQuoc Airways complete its intercontinental operational capacity, but also directly contributes to the US aviation manufacturing and service value chain. This order not only contributes to creating more jobs and boosting production at Boeing's factories but also strengthens confidence and promotes sustainable bilateral economic cooperation between businesses of the two countries.

From this foundation, expanded connectivity will become a powerful lever to boost tourism, investment, and trade flows between the two countries. As geographical distances are shortened by efficient direct flights, economic flows also become smoother. Therefore, investing in a modern wide-body aircraft fleet is not just a business decision, but also a crucial component in the strategy to enhance national competitiveness, while consolidating Vietnam-US economic relations towards stability, balance, and sustainability.

Today, we celebrate the order for up to 40 787 Dreamliner aircraft – a significant milestone, marking Sun PhuQuoc Airways' first direct purchase order and also Vietnam's largest Boeing wide-body aircraft order. This order reflects a clear vision to connect Phu Quoc with the world and build a premium full-service airline. The 787 Dreamliner is the perfect aircraft to fulfill that mission ,” said Ms. Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

According to Boeing's forecast, Vietnam will be the fastest-growing aviation market in Southeast Asia with nearly 8% annual growth by 2030. With a plan to expand its fleet to 100 aircraft by 2030 , Sun PhuQuoc Airways is ready to embrace the wave of high-end tourism, contributing to the sustainable takeoff of Phu Quoc tourism in particular, and Vietnam in general, on the international map.

As Vietnam's first airline named after an island, Sun PhuQuoc Airways is invested in and developed by Sun Group under the "resort aviation" model with a "spoke-and-hub" network, directly connecting Phu Quoc with domestic and international tourism-economic centers through direct flights, reasonable costs, and a seamless experience linked to the Ngoc Island ecosystem. The airline has become one of the few young airlines in Vietnam to possess a closed-loop operational ecosystem, having consecutively completed important certifications from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam. From August 10, 2025, to February 2026 (less than 6 months), the airline has expanded its fleet to 10 aircraft. In December 2025 & 01/2026, SPA consistently achieved the highest on-time performance rate in the domestic aviation industry.

From now until the end of 2026, the airline plans to connect Phu Quoc with many international destinations such as Taiwan - China (Taipei, Kaohsiung), South Korea (Seoul, Busan), Thailand (Bangkok), Singapore, Hong Kong, and India (Mumbai, New Delhi).

With the signing of a record-breaking contract worth up to USD 22.5 billion with Boeing, Sun PhuQuoc Airways once again affirms its position and strong potential as a young and promising airline.
