2. Formation History and Meaning of the Name

Trung Trang Cave was formed millions of years ago through the natural weathering and erosion process from rainwater seeping into the limestone blocks. Initially, the cave was called "Bat Cave" by the locals due to the large number of bats living inside. During the anti-American war, it was a strategic military base and known as "Naval Cave".

The name "Trung Trang Cave" today is associated with the folk legend of Lady Trung Trang – a goddess revered by the people of Cat Ba as the patron saint of the island. According to legend, the Lady once appeared to help the villagers overcome many invasions, maintaining peace and prosperity for the inhabitants. Therefore, naming the cave after her is a way for the people to remember and express their deep gratitude to this sacred deity.

3. Discover the Pristine Beauty Inside Trung Trang Cave

3.1 Unique Stalactite System with Many Interesting Shapes

With a length of about 300 meters, Trung Trang Cave impresses visitors with its vast space and system of stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years. Stepping inside, you will be captivated by the diverse shapes of limestone formations, exquisitely "sculpted" by nature. Thanks to the well-placed lighting, the details inside the cave appear clearly, sparkling and magical like a vivid painting in the heart of the limestone mountains.

The most striking feature of the cave is the uniquely shaped stalactites and stalagmites. Some formations look like animals, trees, and even evoke the image of a map of Vietnam – all naturally formed, without human intervention. Many large formations are likened to ancient castles, leading visitors to imagine a mythological scene.

Another noteworthy advantage is that the cave's temperature remains pleasantly comfortable year-round, providing a cool and ideal atmosphere for exploration – especially on hot summer days.

3.2 Diverse Ecosystem and Natural Environment Inside the Cave

In addition to the magnificence of the stalactites, Trung Trang Cave is also home to a diverse and abundant ecosystem. Many bat species live in the deep caves, creating an animal community characteristic of cave environments. The flapping of wings and calls of the bat colony echo through the space, contributing to the mysterious and attractive atmosphere for visitors to explore.

Besides, the cave is also home to many insects and reptiles that have adapted well to the dark and humid conditions inside. The water droplets falling from the cave ceiling form small puddles, providing an ideal habitat for endemic and rare species. To protect this valuable ecological balance, the management of Trung Trang Cave applies strict measures such as controlling the lighting in the cave, and also requires visitors to maintain order, avoid making noise, and not litter.

The air in the cave always maintains freshness and coolness thanks to the natural air exchange through the crevices and vents. This not only helps preserve the ancient stalactite structures but also maintains the sustainable development of the unique ecosystem, contributing to the distinct value of Trung Trang Cave in the Cat Ba National Park complex.

4. Legends and Images at Trung Trang Cave

4.1 The Reclining Girl Statue and the Legend of the Trung Trang Lady

One of the most impressive highlights at Trung Trang Cave is a natural rock formation resembling a reclining girl. Locals call it the image of the Trung Trang Lady—a legendary heroine who sacrificed herself to protect Cat Ba island from foreign invaders.

Legend says the Trung Trang Lady was a beautiful, courageous woman with magical powers. When enemies attacked Cat Ba island, she used her magic to transform rocks into a strong army to fight them off. After defeating the invaders, she transformed herself into stone to continue guarding this sacred land. The image of the girl lying among the rocks is considered a sacred symbol, representing unwavering strength and deep patriotism.

This legend is not only a unique part of folk culture but also reflects the indomitable spirit and national pride of the Cat Ba people. Therefore, many visitors to Trung Trang Cave feel a sacred, mysterious atmosphere rich in tradition and history.

4.2 The Carved Python and Other Strange Natural Symbols

Besides the famous reclining girl, Trung Trang Cave also contains many other unique natural symbols, most notably a giant python-shaped rock. According to local legend, this python was the loyal guardian of the Trung Trang Lady, always accompanying and protecting her in maintaining security for the Cat Ba archipelago.

Deeper inside the cave, visitors can admire other fascinating rock formations, such as a lion with shimmering golden mane under the lights, a rock resembling a map of Vietnam, and especially rock formations representing the path to heaven and hell in traditional folk beliefs.

Each rock symbol in Trung Trang Cave is associated with captivating legends vividly conveyed by tour guides. Thanks to these meaningful cultural stories, the cave is not merely a magnificent natural wonder but also a cultural destination steeped in history and Vietnamese folk spirit.

5. Experience visiting Trung Trang Cave, Cat Ba

5.1 Ideal time and reasonable visiting time

Trung Trang Cave is open to visitors all year round, but the ideal time to explore is from September to April of the following year. During this period, the weather in Cat Ba is usually cool, with little rain, making it convenient to travel and fully enjoy the natural beauty inside the cave.

Visitors should avoid coming in the summer, especially from June to August, when a large number of tourists flock to Cat Ba, causing overcrowding and limiting the sightseeing and photography experience in the cave. In addition, the rainy season from July to September is also not a suitable time because the roads are easily slippery, making it difficult to travel.

The suitable visiting time for Trung Trang Cave usually lasts about 1 to 2 hours. Visitors should choose the early morning (from 8 to 10 am) or late afternoon (from 3 to 5 pm) to avoid crowds and have a comfortable and relaxing experience. With this time, you can explore the entire cave, listen to fascinating historical stories from the tour guide and take impressive photos without being rushed.

5.2 Entrance ticket price and accompanying services

The entrance fee to Trung Trang Cave is currently very reasonable, providing valuable experiences for visitors. The entrance ticket for adults ranges from 80,000 VND/person, while children have a preferential price of around 40,000 VND. However, this price may vary depending on the season or the management board's policy, so visitors should update the ticket information before visiting to avoid unwanted inconveniences.

To explore more about the history and culture of the cave, visitors can choose to hire a local guide for a fee of 150,000 to 200,000 VND for a group. These guides are all locals, with extensive knowledge of legends, special stories and natural highlights inside the cave that guidebooks often do not mention.

Near the cave entrance, there are convenient services such as souvenir stalls, drinks, and snacks for visitors. Prices here may be slightly higher than outside the town but are still quite affordable. Additionally, visitors can rent light jackets to stay warm when entering the cave, especially on chilly days.

5.3 Clothing and Necessary Items to Prepare

When visiting Trung Trang Cave, choosing appropriate clothing and bringing suitable items will make your trip more comfortable and safe. For the best experience, prioritize wearing light, airy, and easy-to-move clothing suitable for the cool temperature inside the cave. A light jacket is an essential item, especially when visiting in spring or autumn, as the temperature inside the cave is usually much lower than outside.

Athletic shoes or hiking shoes with non-slip soles are the best choice to ensure safety when moving on the steep and damp paths inside the cave. Avoid wearing slippers or high heels as they will cause difficulties and pose a risk of slipping and falling.

Don't forget to bring a personal water bottle to maintain adequate hydration, especially on hot sunny days. A camera capable of taking good pictures in low light conditions will help you capture beautiful moments inside the cave. Additionally, preparing a spare battery is essential so you don't miss the opportunity to save images.

Sweat towels, insect repellent, and a few snacks are also practical items to bring. If traveling with young children, you should prepare extra clothes and suitable food for them to ensure comfort and convenience throughout the exploration of Trung Trang Cave.
